De la Merced Bridge
The bridge was rebuilt over the original one, designed by Ernesto Hoffmeyer in 1883
De la Merced Church
The old San José de la Naja monastery was built in 1675 to redeem convicts. It was rebuilt in 1750, and today, fully refurbished, is the venue for "Bilborock", plays and youth music shows.
Riverside Bridge
This graceful pedestrian bridge has an iron arch designed by Pablo de Alzola y Minondo in 1881.
Riverside Arcade
The arcade delimits the Medieval Citadel and was declared an Artistic-Historical Building in 1972.
Riverside Market
The market features an eclectic style and a beautiful architecture with outstanding windows. It was designed by Pedro de Ispizua y Susunaga, who came from Bermeo. The market, which is well-known for its high-quality fish and seafood, was built in 1929. After the 1983 summer flood, it was dried up and refurbished, so its interior structure and facilities have been modernised.
San Antón Church
This Gothic church was built over the ruins of the old city's fortress at the end of the 14 th century. Its elegant layout, together with San Antón Bridge, is part of Bilbao's shield. The church treasures an Plateresque altarpiece created by Guiot de Beaugrant.
San Antón Bridge
The bridge we can see today was built between 1871 and 1877 by Pablo de Alzola y Minondo and Ernesto Hoffmeyer, somewhat above the original medieval bridge, which used to be part of the City Shield.
Atxuri Railway Station
It was built by Santander architect Leonardo Rucabado in Basque regional style circa 1883. Donostia - San Sebastián and Gernika - Bermeo lines of Eusko - Trenbideak , among others, operate in this station.
La Encarnación Church and Nunnery
This old Dominican nunnery was built in the early 16 th century. It has a Gothic interior and a Renaissance entrance. It hosts many tombs bearing family shields.
Sacred Art Museum
Situated in the Convento de la Encarnación (Encarnación Nunnery) it exhibits a wide range of Basque sacred artworks ranging from Romanesque to contemporary styles, including a magnificent silver collection.
Miguel de Unamuno's Birthplace
The commemorative tablet at 16 Ronda street indicates Unamuno's birthplace. Miguel de Unamuno, the renown thinker, poet, novelist and scholar was born on 29 September 1864.
Zamudio's City Gate
The place bears the name of the old gate of the city walls running along Ronda street, torn down in 1573.
St. James Cathedral
The Cathedral honours St. James, Bilbao's official patron saint since 1643. Built at the end of the 14 th century in Gothic style, it has three naves with triforium and ambulatory. The Gothic cloisters are small but beautifully designed. The building became a cathedral in 1949. Its tower and main façade, in Neogothic style, were designed by Severino de Achúcarro and finished in 1887.
Santiago/ St. James Small Square
The square displays an elegant fountain designed by Luis Paret during Carlos III's reign. At the top it reads: " Por el bien público " (For the good of the people). A series of 19th century houses in front of the cathedral's façade and tower embellish the square. The large atrium, now enclosed by a fence, stands to the south of the square.
