Sacred Heart Monument
This huge bronze statue, 5 metres tall, was created by Angel Calahorra, and is sitting on an immense white pedestal designed by Coullaut Valera. The statue was erected by popular request in the mid 1920s. It is located at the far end of Gran Vía, which makes it even more spectacular, especially at night, when it is wisely illuminated.
Asylum and Gardens
The asylum project -a building intended to be an asylum for the province's down-in-outs- dates back to 1762. The building was designed in 1868 by Antonio de Goicoechea with the support of the Spanish king, Amadeo I de Saboya, and it was opened in 1872. It used to be an orphanage, but today it serves as a home for the elderly. It is an enormous mansion in eclectic style combining classical and baroque lines.
The asylum is surrounded by gardens full of different kinds of trees and in them there is a bust dedicated to Luis Briñas, the institution's main benefactor.
San Mamés Footbal Stadium
The first stadium was inaugurated in 1913, 15 years after the Athletic Club de Bilbao's foundation, on the San Mamés lowland. The present stadium was built by a group of architects in 1952, and remodelled for the 1982 World Cup. It is called la catedral del fútbol (the football's cathedral) and it is the seat of los leones (San Mamés's lions)' matches.
Bilbao Holy Civil Hospital - Basurto

Its cornerstone was laid on 17 August 1900 by Queen Doña María Cristina, and its inauguration was celebrated on 11 November 1908, in the presence of the king, Don Alfonso XIII, María Cristina's son. The building reveals an English influence in its stone, brick and tile pavilions, placed among gardens.
